Police Visit

Recently we were lucky enough to have Constable Jim Ellis who is a local Police Officer from the Stanthorpe Police Station that came to visit us at Country Kids, to talk with the children about the role of a Police Officer (to help us if we are in trouble) and how to recognise a Police Officer (blue uniform, badge and checks). He also read “The Three Little Pigs” to our class.

He drew the outline of a child on a huge piece of paper, hung it on the wall, and talked about different areas of our bodies. He talked about how we might feel when we are unsafe, such as butterflies in our tummies, feeling scared, screaming or getting goosebumps.

Constable Ellis told the children what they could do if they felt uncomfortable, who they could tell, and what phone number they could ring.

The class made five finger puppets, which represented the five different people (called a Network) that the children could talk to if they feel unsafe

1.         Parent

2.         Grandparent

3.         Friend

4.         Teacher

5.         Police

It is very important that the children are aware of the 5 people in their Network within in their community and family. Having a Network ensures children can feel safe at all times.

The children enjoyed sharing their experiences of when they felt scared, and how this made their bodies feel, like butterflies.

1.         We all have the right to feel safe all the time

2.         Nothing is so awful that we can't talk with someone about it.

After our discussion the most exciting part of the Police visit was the children got to sit in a real police car, turn on the red and blue lights and hear their voices outside the car and using the loud speaker and operating the lights and sirens, they had lots of fun.

The children and Teachers thanked Constable Jim Ellis for sharing such valuable information with us and for taking the time to visit our Kindergarten.
